“JASPER’S CONCERT”

SUCCESS AT TOWN HALL Characteristic of the organiser—delightfully unconventional and informal —Jasper’s concert at the Town Hall last evening provided a big audience with a bright two and a-half hours’ entertainment. A varied bill-of-fare, with all the elements of a good vaudeville show, was staged, and the audience, entering into the spirit of the performance, enjoyed it immensely, judging by the applause. The Auckland City Mission is to benefit by the proceeds of the concert. Energetically conducted by Jasper Calder, the orchestra created a good first expression with the overture “Lustpiel.” The vocalists contributed largely to tho success of the entertainment. Miss Irene Erost’s fine contralto voice was heard to much advantage in “Softly Awakes My Heart’’ and “The Sapphic Ode,” while Mr. Ernest Snell sang “Invictus” very effectively. Mrs. E. Kevin gave two charming renderings of selected numbers.

Clever patter and juggling by Norman Tate, sleight of hand tricks by Hr. K. tV. Riddle, and good ventriloquistic exposition by the Kindleys, kept the audience in a happy frame of mind. Mr. H. Chaturn’s humorous songs also caused much merriment. One of the best appreciated items were saxophone solos by Mr. George Poore.

The dramatic sketch “Sherlock Holmes,” depicting the interview between the detective and Professor Moriarty was staged most effectively. The role of Sherlock Holmes was well portrayed by Jasper Calder, while JDr. H. Barraclough gave a good characterisation of the professor. Miss Edna Herrick acted very well as “Billy,” the page boy.

A fine exhibition of gymnasium work, embracing acrobatic and tumbling feats by a Y.M.C.A. troupe under Mr. Frank Rogers, concluded an excellent entertainment.
