CARDINAL DUBOIS DEAD
ARCHBISHOP OF PARIS SINCE 1916 FEARLESS FRENCH PRELATE (Australian and N.Z. Press Association) (United Service) Reed. 10 a.m. LONDON, Monday. The death has occurred of Cardinal Louis Ernest Dubois, Archbishop of Paris. He was born at St. Calais in 185(5, and was created a cardinal in 1916. Cardinal Dubois succeeded Cardinal Amette as Archbishop of Paris. His signal patriotism during the dark days of the war found a parallel during the past year in liis fearless leadership of the CWurch in France, when menaced by enemies in ‘high places within her borders. His efforts for the social reorganisation of his people recently found expression in organising a social work the inspiration of which is particularly touching. The “Cite du Souvenir” (City of Remembrance) will be a group of houses for working men in a labour suburb, where many large families live. The group will contain 300 apartments, which will be offered at extremely low rentals to families with children. In the centre of this great “city” will be a day nursery, dispensaries and co-operative stores. An oratory in which the Blessed Sacrament will be kept will also be a feature of the plan. Each one of the quartei*s will bear the name of a soldier of that section of Paris who fell on the field of battle, and his portrait will be placed on the wall of the main room. This is why the settlement will be known as “Cite du Souvenir.”
