COCK PHEASANT SHOT OUT OF SEASON REMUERA INCIDENT —; When a young resident of Remuera recently shot a cock pheasant out of season, Mr. Justice Ostler was watching him from the window of his home nearby. ’J'HE young man, J. Gould, was prosecuted by the Acclimatisation Society this morning at the Police Court, a plea of guilty being entered upon his behalf. Mr. West, for the society, could see no reason why the maximum penalty of £lO should not be imposed. The offence had been committed on the Northern slopes of Remuera, where the residents delighted in such traces of wild life as the pheasants that were to bb seen there. “TVe could bring other charges against this young man, but he has made a frank admission, although I am told that he tried to hide himself at first,” added Mr. West. “The charge is brought under section nine of the act.’* For defendant, it was explained that the bird had been scratching up the garden Somebody* in the house had said. “There’s that bird that has been doing all the damage,” and the defendant. a young man barely out of nis teens, had shot it with no thought of committing a breach of the act. Gould was fined £5 and costs.
