Several Good Three-Y ear-Olds for Ashburton

Pink Coat and Desert Song are Engaged PROSPECTS FOR TOMORROW Although most interest of Northern sportsmen will be focussed upon Avondale tomorrow, there is plenty to attract attention at the one-day meeting tomorrow at Ashburton, for several promising three-year-olds are carded to make their appearance. Among them is Desert who appears to hold a mortgage on the Trial .Plate, a scamper over live furlongs. Chide has been galloping well enough to show that lie holds an undeniable chance in the Ashburton Handicap, one and a-quarter miles, tho small field of five being something in his favour. At present Chide is a popular light-weiglit fancy for the New Zealand Cup. The three-year-old Dutch Money is recommended in tho Longbeach Hack, and another of the same age in the ex-North Islander Acredity is in the same affair. Night Lad was a splendid two-year-old last season, for whom a lot of money was refused. He is in the Ashburton Handicap tomorrow, and as bo is by Night Raid he may develop staying ability. However, he is preferred in tho Farewell Handicap, in which he is to receive 101 b from tho redoubtable Pink Coat. The latter should nearly win if he strips'well. In the same race is the Great Northern Guineas candidate Flair, a very smart filly, so that in themselves the three-year-olds should make of the Farewell Handicap a most interesting event. The following promise to be well supported in their engagements tomorrow:— Longbeach Hack.— Dutch Money and Acredity. Selma Trot Handicap.— Otaio Rose and John Noble. Trial Plate.— Desert Song and Miss Nightraid. Ashburton Handicap. —Chide and H oylake. Fairfield Hack.—Sweet Refrain and Sea Raid. Rakaia Handicap Trot.—Nell de Beau and Wrackler. Farewell Handicap (open).—Pink Coat and Flair. Tho following are the acceptances for tomorrow’s programme: j. } LONGBEACH HACK

Betwixt and Between After being tried out in hack and open company, town hall and country classes. Maori Boy is to be tried out tomorrow in the middle quality event, the Henderson Handicap. He galloped nicely at Avondale this week, and if ho cannot win it will not be for lack of condition. The roomy Avondale course will suit the back horse, and it must not be forgotten that it was on this course that Maori Boy won his first race. That was 12 months ago. so he is due for a birthday success this week-end. Promising Youngsters In a division of the two-year-old parade at Pakuranga last month \ anessa was a good winner. showing plenty of pace out of the barrier and maintaining it to the winning post. That she has gone on the right way during the intervening few weeks, the filly demonstrated on Tuesday morning y when she ran a particularly smart half-mile in good time on the outside of the course proper. Another >oungster who did well at Avondale on Tuesdav was Oil King. These two* year-olds should get on the winning list this season, even if they do not succeed in the Avondale tetakes tomorrow.
