MORAL DANGER
BAN ON “BACHELOR” FLATS TOWN PLANNERS’ SUPPORT That the erection of one-roomed “bachelor” flats In the city area is undesirable from economic, hygienic and social considerations was the opinion of the housing group of the Auckland Town-Planning Association expressed in a report presented by Miss Alice Hasten at a meeting last evening. The association endorsed the action of the City Council in refusing to grant a licence for their erection. Chief objection was taken from the social welfare aspect, it being held that many young people would take flats of this type in order to be away from the wise control exercised at hostels. It was noted in this connection that the scheme does not make any specific provision for supervision from a moral standpoint. The committee also suggested that buildings of the type proposed should be designed for the accommodation of one sex only.
