ROSEHILL GUINEAS

PHAR LAP COMES INTO THE PICTURE NEXT SATURDAY’S CLASSIC The forward running ol the New 1 Zealand-bred three-year-old Phar Lap. ; by Xightraid from Entreaty (Winkie — Prayer Wheel, by Pilgrim’s Progress!. |in the Warwick Stakes recently, in ; which he finished right up fourth to j Limerick. Mollison and Winalot. and : his second to Mollison last Saturday. ; lends interest to the following article ;on next Saturday’s Rosehill Guineas | (nine furlongs), penned by a Sydney I writer last week: Unless a three-year-old shows up i unexpectedly against Limerick (he | was scratched). Mollison and Winalot i in the Chelmsford Stakes at Randwick. heiting on this year’s Rosehill Guineas j is likely to take a wide range—wider, possibly, than in any preceding year. The position is really caused i through Honour’s non-entry for the i Guineas, and though Parkwood, now I second favourite for the Derby, will j probably start in the race, there is j really no certaintj* attached to his being ! the popular pick. Will He Stay? ! There is a doubt as to Parkwood’s I stamina, and his fade-out after en- . tering the straight second in the War- ! wick Stakes has heightened the im- | pression that he will not get the Derby | distance. | Three furlongs less in the Rosehill | Guineas, however, will help him. but | even that distance is a furlong further | than when he tired at Randwick. The : run. however, will probably have im- : proved the colt. Comanche is looked upon as the most likely Sydney three-year-old to win the Derby. At the three furlongs post in the Hobartville Stakes he was actually last, yet he ran through the field to finish sixth. His trainer. D. Lewis, was not hopeful of the colt’s success then, so the run will have done him good. Comanche will run in the Chelmsford Stakes, and though few racegoers will expect him to beat the older cracks, he is likely to show sufficient form to indicate an undoubted ! Guineas chance. Has Big Following Toper and Holdfast will fight their Hobartville battle over again. Success has given Toper the greater public following now. but Holdfast allowed to run along at his leisure, might prove the form wrong. He is unlikely to develop into a stayer, but many horses j lacking in Derby stamina have won j the nine furlongs Guineas. Pentheus had gone off by the time | the A.J.C. autumn meeting commenced, j but his forward running in the Hobart- ; ville Stakes suggested that he might ! show his best this spring. Lacking in real racing condition, he battled on well at the end of seven furlongs a few days ago. so he might have stamina. He is bred to stay, and even if he does not develop into a Derby proposition, he must at least be taken into consideration for the Guineas. Derby Horses? Trainer J. Scully is believed to have great hopes for Violin Solo’s development into the outstanding three-year-old, and his fast finish to Ticino at Rosehill recently was a good performance. Phar Lap, with really very little relative pull in the weights, finished right on top of Limerick, Mollison and Winalot in the Warwick Stakes, creating the surprise of the race. His previous performances do not warrant j the belief that he is anywhere near ■ Derby standard, but that Warwick run ! was very impressive. His connec- ' tions ran him solely to get a line on ; his Derby chance, and the three-year- I old’s backing in Melbourne on Monday j for the Melbourne Cup suggested they \ were more than satisfied. It is a remarkable year for three- j rear-olds —at this stage—and with Honour out anything might start favourite for the Rosehill Guineas. And even Honour lias yet to prove that he retains his autumn superiority.
