LEADING SOCIAL WORKER

MRS. A. E. HERBERT DEAD JUSTICE OF THE PEACE Press Association CHRISTCHURCH, Today. The death occurred in Christchurch on Saturday of Mrs. Annie Elizabeth Herbert at the age of #-2 years. Mrs. Herbert was one of the bestknown social workers in Christchurch. She was a justice of the peace, a member of a former Christchurch City Council, and a member of a former North Canterbury Hospital Board. She refrained from seeking re-election owing to uncertain health. The distinction of being the first woman to hold the position of chairman of the Hospital Board’s Benevolent Institutions Committee also fell to Mrs. Herbert. The committee controlled the Jubilee Home, Turangi Home, Essex Home and the Armagh Street Orphanage. She was also president of the Social Welfare Guild and a member of the Board of Governors of the Christchurch Technical College.
