KEEN BILLIARDS FINAL
ROBERTS WINS AUCKLAND PROVINCIAL TITLE BOWIE’S GOOD FIGHT With the result in doubt right up to the closing 'stages, the final of the Auckland Amateur Billiards’ Championship on Saturday produced splendid billiards. Both sessions were keenly contested, and victory went to E. V. Roberts only after a great tussle with A. Bowie. , The first session’s scores were:—E. V. Roberts, in pla3% 501; A. Bowie, 449. The former added six points at his first visit, but six cues later he made a break of 41. Bowie replied with breaks of 45 and 35, and reduced his opponent’s lead, 20 points only separating the scores. Both played attractive billiards and made most of their opportunities of scoring. Roberts forced the pace at this stage, and at intervals recorded breaks of 44 and 22, and further efforts of 52 and 21 in consecutive visits gained him a good lead, the scores being 84S to 717. Bowie then worked off some of the deficit by responding with runs of 27 and 30, and soon afterward recorded the best break of the session, one for 63. Roberts, however, kept his lead by adding a run of 43 to his total. Bowie made up more leeway with runs of 24 and 23, the score at this stage being 953 to 919 in Roberts's favour. A further break of 28 by Bowie brought his score up to 949, to 959 by Roberts. The game was very exciting now, as both made determined efforts, but. over-eagerness caused both to miss scoring chances. Roberts held off his opponent to win a great game by 41 points. The final scores were:—E. V. Roberts (holder), 1,000; breaks of 42, 44, 46, 22, 52, 21 and 43, average 9.5 for both sessions. A. Bowie, 959; breaks of 45, 35, 31, 63, 24, 32 and 28; average, 9,25. On behalf of Messrs. Billiards, Limited, Mr. C. Cummins congratulated the players on their excellent display and presented Mr. Roberts with the Billiards, Limited, Shield, which lie again holds for one year, also a gold medal to commemorate his victory. Mr. Bowie received a set of balls as the prize for the run-ner-up. He also received a special trophy 4pr recording the highest break of 150. Hoth players eulogised the excellent playing conditions under which the championship was held. .
