ATHLETIC CURTAIN
CROSS-COUNTRY RACE AT ELLERSLIE COOPER WINS The 1929 winter athletic season in Auckland was brought to a close on Saturday afternoon, when the metropolitan four-miles cross-country championship was staged, at the Ellerslie racecourse grounds. The event attracted fair entries, the course being three times over the hill. The first round included the water jump, the second live double, and the third and final finished up the straight. As neither J. NY. Savidan, New Zealand 10,000 metres champion, nor Gordon Kells started, N. F. Cooper was the virtual scratch man, and from the start was favourite for fastest time.. Cooper was set a big task in overtaking the field, which included such solid runners us F. L. Witten, S, Andrews and J. A. Crum. He lost no time in making up the leeway, however, and ran in third to Browne and Witten. Browne, who is a Mount Albert Grammar School long-distance man, was in fine fettle, and once he took the lead there was no overtaking him. Horan ran well in the 7pyds handicap sprint, winning his heat and the final, for which he received a cup. Following are the results: 75YDS HANDICAP First Heat C. Torbett (7yds) 3. J. C.
