“YOUTH WHO LOST HIS HEAD” TOOK MOTHER’S CAR Described by counsel as having 1 os. his head, Edward J. Stewart drove a motor-car into a railway engine near the New Lynn station on a wet night three months ago. rpHIS morning at the Police Court *- Mr. Jacobson entered a plea of guilty for him on a charge of attempting to cross the railway line when it was not clear. According to Senior - Sergeant O’Grady, defendant had hit the engine about 11.40 p.m. on June 23. The incident had occurred at the Totara Road crossing and the engine, which was brightly lit, had whistled twice. Counsel’s explanation was that it was a wet night and defendant was unable to see more than 20 or 30 yards on account of the film on his windscreen. Mr. F. K. Hunt. S.M.: Glycerine is cheap enough, surely. “He lost his head, I suppose,” said Mr. Jacobson. “It was his mother’s car and she has to pay £7O for tho damage. Any fine that is imposed will only punish the mother. The boy, who is only 17, had the car out without authority and he is not to be allowed to drive again.” Stewart was ordered to pay costs.
