BILLIARDS

AUCKLAND CHAMPIONSHIP In the opening game of the Auckland provincial amateur billiards championship for the Billiards Ltd. shield last evening the holder, Mr. E. V. Roberts, defeated Mr. E. W. Warren. Roberts was first to start and at his second visit to the table made a run of 23 and a little later added a 29 break to his score. He was playing very attractive billiards and averaged fifteen points per cue at his first six visits to the table. Warren up to this stage had very few chances to show his best, and fell behind somewhat with the scores. Roberts made a good effort for 52 and a further break of 35 by playing nice all-round billiards. At his next visit he compiled a 41 break and at this stage the scores were 266 to 51 in his favour. At his next three visits die added runs of 21, 32 and 22. Warren was in a hopeless position as far as the scores were concerned, but his play was below his usual standard owing to eye trouble. Roberts continued to score very freely and ran out an easy winner. The final scores were:—E. V. Roberts, 500; E. W. Warren, 96. Roberts’s best breaks were:—23, 29, 52, 35, 41. 21. 32. 22, 20, 26 and 42 unfinished, making an average of 15.
