SPORTS DAY AT THAMES
(From Our Own Correspondent) THAMES, Monday. It was sports gala day at Thames on Saturday, and some 200 Aucklanders accompanied the various teams in their quest of the scalps of the Thames hockey, basketball and football teams. Three hockey matches were played (two men's and one women’s), two football and one basketball match. The attendance at the High School grounds was a record, more than 2,000 spectators being present. Chief interest centred in the Auckland B and Thames representative football contest. The large crowd was given a good exhibition of Rugby and enthusiasm ran high, especially when Thames had a lead of 6 points. The weather and ground were perfect, and the game, as is always the case when these two old rivals meet, was played in friendly spirit. It was a close call for Auckland, and only in the last few minutes did it pull the match out of the fire, and got home with a margin of two points. The excursionists left Thames on their homeward journey by the Rangitoto on Sunday afternoon, a large crowd assembling to see them off.
