HOLDFAST IS WELL

IN HOBARTVILLE TOMORROW GAY BALLERINA TOO Not the least interesting' race on the Warwick Farm (Sydney) programme tomorrow is the Hobartville Stakes, of £I,OOO, seven furlongs, for three-years-olds. Holdfast is the star performer, but if Gay Ballerina is at her best she should make Holdfast go to concede her half a stone. A Sydney writer in his paper of last Friday penned the following about Holdfast: That Holdfast was yesterday able to record the best gallop of the morning at Randwick indicates the strong possibility of his striking his two-year-old form again and proving superior to the three-year-olds, at least in the Hobartville Stakes at Warwick Farm on August 31. Wide out on the course proper, covering 40 yards farther than the actual six furlongs, he recorded 1.172. It took Limerick and Aussie 1.18! That emphasises the excellence of the effort. Looks in Fine Trim Holdfast has an engagement in .the Dundas Handicap next Saturday with 8.0. He is being sharpened up for that race, and although seven furlongs “first up” against older horses offers no easy task, he may win that as a stepping-stone in his preparation for the Hobartville. (Holdfast was beaten by Paquito in that race last Saturday.) But whether lie scores on Saturday or not. there are many of Ranclwick's good judges who feel sure that he will beat the other Derby cracks in the Hobartville Stakes. Holdfast pulled up in good order after yesterday’s work, and although it is only lately since he began to move along at a fast gait, he has the appearance of haying accomplished a solid preparation. Ho is by Wedge and past experience has shown that they do well without a great deal of swallow catching on the tracks. Only One Defeat Holdfast won five races last year, and his only defeat was in the wet in the Champagne Stakes at Randwick. Yesterday's gallop reveals that he has recovered all his two-year-old speed, and admirers of a good horse will be pleased to note this fact, for they can look forward to seeing a great galloper in action very soon. The following horses were left in the Hobartville Stakes after the first acceptance: —Goldminer, Urangarra, W oodgers, My Talisman. Molang, Peacemaker, Tickle Toe g.
