TRACK TRIALS

FOR TARANAKI HUNT INTERESTING TESTS With the Taranaki Hunt meeting 1 to be decided on Saturday, the New Plymouth tracks have assumed a busy appearance, and several new horses were seen at work yesterday morning, while th’e number of trackwatchers was considerably augmented, wrote "Moturoa” in Wednesday’s “Taranaki Daily News.” Conditions were ideal for work on the tracks, and consequent on the solid state of the turf some good times were registered. Most of the work was confined to the trial grass, but the plough was also very fast. Karangawai worked at a steady pace on the plough and was jumped later in the day. Patrolet ran the last live of a sixfurlong task in 1.61. The half-sister to Lady Anstruther, upon whom the name of Espion has been conferred, pleased with her e£-. fort, but may not be forward enough to be seen to advantage at the hunt meeting on Saturday. After breakfast Peg Black, accompanied by Bonognc, was given some barrier practice, and the pair later worked at steady pace on the plough. Shaped Well Plying Shot went better than expected for a green horse when he finished on terms with Quillfire over six furlongs in 1.10. Quillfire also shaped well. .Tust John, who is still on the gross side, worked on the plough over two circuits at a steady pace. The Swell and Black Odin were treated to a similar task. Black Odin strips in great racing condition and will have many friends on Saturday. Monoie surprised when she finished in front of the two-year-old Orapai when they scampered up the straight, doing the last two furlongs in 25. There was a stiff head wind against them which the youngsters did not relish, but Monoie has come on well since her spell and looks like coming good. Puawhato and Michael Shimose went a round together, running the last five in 1.9. None The Worse Waitaunaha, who looks none the worse for his fall at the Christchurch Hunt meeting, worked well on the plough, but was not out to make time. Oration had a slight advantage over Whenuanui when they hopped off from the peg at the four furlongs, and though the Acre gelding made up ground coming around the bend, Oration maintained his length lead when they passed the post, the journey taking 52. It was a good effort and Oration gained a lot of friends for Saturday, while Whenuanui also impressed. Muirangi Girl made a welcome appearance on the tracks after her spell of beach work and looks none the worse for her mishap. She strode out well and there seems to be every prospect of her racing on Saturday. She worked two rounds on the plough ! and picked up Omeo over the last cir- | cuit, the pair moving well. Lady Quex and Royal Finance sprinted three furlongs against the wind up the straight in 39. and they were not pushed over the last furlong. Mint Leaf had Rotokare for a companion in a four-furlong task on the plough, and both shaped well tc cover the distance in 55. Mint Loaf is rapidly throwing off his gross ap<pearance. Gold Dawn, who is getting into good condition, worked on the plough. Hipo and Singer jumped away from the six furlongs post together and ran the first half-mile with the wind behind them in a little under 51. They were not knocked about over the last two and the journey was covered in 1.19. The Campfire—Coronet filly has. ; been scratched for the Opunake Hack Cal Ithe was penalised Til* for his j win in the Bracelet at Ellerslie "on . Saturday and will now have to carry | 11.6 in the Hunters’ Fiat Handicap at ; the Taranaki Hunt meeting on Suturi day.
