Rapier Will Run in New Zealand Cup
OWNER WANTS TROPHY RICCARTON JOTTINGS especial to THE SUN) CHRISTCHURCH, Thursday. Though he has not raced since he ran away with the Hororata Jubilee Cup in Maych, Chide has done a lot of work in the last six weeks and is not far from his best. This morning he put up a very attractive gallop over a mile at headquarters. He was joined by Netley over the last half-mile and he was going attractively at the end. The Paladin gelding is already being discussed as a likely New Zealand Cup horse, and he has such an attractive record that he may not be out of his place in the big November race. He has shown that he is the possessor of much speed and is a good stayer, too. He has the enviable record of having disposed of his rivals at his last four starts. He is sure to be among the fancied candidates for the big Riccarton two-miler. Chide is due to make his reappearance at tho Ashburton meeting next month. The Boniform gelding. Moratorium, has been recommissioned and is getting through serviceable tasks at Riccarton. The Riccarton light-weight horseman, Arthur E.astwood, will be riding at the Otago Hunt Club’s meeting next week, and his mounts will include Membo and Sailing Home. Eastwood probably will be on Chide in his engagements this season. After Ten (L. Evans) jumped two rounds of* hurdles at Riccarton this morning. The pace was not on. but he gave a satisfactory display for a novice. For Sydney Gold Tinge, the Rosehill Guineas and A.J.C. Derby candidate, demonstrated
at Riccarton .this morning that he is nedring his best for his spring campaign by galloping attractively over four furlongs with the three-year-old Desert Song. There was not rquch between the pair at any stage, and they finished practically together, recording tho brilliant time of 49 4-5. Gold Tinge pulled up especially well. With a race into him he may not be long in striking his best form. The Paper Money gelding has never looked better than at present, and the improvement W. J. Tomkinson has wrought in him in the last few weeks is very noticeable. After tho gelding won the Breeders' Plate as a two-year-old, jockey Munro said that he was the fastest juvenile he had ridden, and later he was referred to as a “flying machine.” Gold Tinge certainly is carrying himself in great stylo at present, and it may not be overstepping the mark to suggest that he will foot it with the best of his . age up to a mile at least when he becomes thoroughly seasoned. Overdrawn, also an inmate of Claridge’s stable, struck himself in the Brabazon Handicap at the Christchurch Hunt meeting, and has not been able to work fast since. However, the Paper Money gelding is being restricted to light exercises on the lead, and he may be in active commission again in a fortnight’s time. Colt for EMerslie Leader performed so satisfactorily in his Riccarton engagements that it is little wonder that his connections have decided to send him to Ellerslie to contest the Great Northern Guineas. Of course, the Chief Ruler colt will striko a very formidable opponent in Pink Coat, who is likely to be favourite fo.r the northern classic, but his showings at Riccarton revealed that he was no ordinary galloper. Amor, who races in the same ownership as Leader, will also make the trip to Ellerslie. He has been working along in good style during the last couple of weeks, and may not be long in returning to form. It was recently stated, in the North that Rapier might not fLilfil his engagement in the New Zealand Cup, but this is not correct. The Greyspear horse is training along satisfactorily for his important November engagement, and both the horse’s trainer end owner are intent on winning this year's race. Rapier won the Cup in 1927, and ran second to OratriX last year after being a trifle unlucky, and despite the fact that he will be right up in this year’s handicap he is sure to run well if he continues to improve as at present. The Southern horseman, Fred Voight, has been engaged to ride Rapier in all his coming engagements. Rascal and Fresh Breeze will leave for Wingatui next Thursday m order to compete at the Otago Hunt Club’s meeting, to be held on Saturday, September 7. Page Boy was also nominated for the meeting, but his trainer considers that he is not sufficiently forward to do himself justice, and he will remain at home. Both Fresh Breeze and Rascal have done well since they last raced, and should show to advantage in their approaching engagements. Prior to the Grand National meeting, the Demosthenes gelding Haze had been working particularly well on the tracks, and it was expected that he would show to advantage in his Riocarton engagements. However, he was a rank disappointment, and the only conclusion to be arrived at is that the gelding is not a genuine galloper. Since he entered F. P. Claridge’s stable Haze has failed to repeat his track work in public, but the first time he takes it into his head to gallop he will make it warm for the opposition. Beau Geste . has not sported silk ; sine© he competed at the Ashburton ’ meeting in June, but the Boniform gelding is again progressing favourably, in his work, and will make his ! next appearance at the Ashburton 1 spring fixture, to be held next month.
