TALK OF SUICIDE

BAIL REFUSED ON GRAVE CHARGE “I don’t think he is entitled to bail,” said Detective-Sergeant Kelly of John Robert McMullan at the Police Court this morning. “He threatened to commit suicide when he was arrested yesterday.” McMullan, a bushman, aged 29, was charged with indecent assault on a male. He was remanded for a week. Mr. Smyth, asking for bail, denied that accused had expressed any intention of committing suicide. The Detective-Sergeant: The detective who arrested him particularly asked me to put that fact before the court.

Mr. E. C. Cutten, S.M., was of the opinion that it was not the type of case that warranted bail, apart from the suggestion of suicide. The application was refused, and the magistrate told counsel that he could renew his application at any time.
