Fletcher, of Wellington, ha.; been selected as referee for the Wai - rarapa versus Southland shield match at Carterton on Saturday. * * * Death at Hospital As a result of a petition arising our of a fatality at a mental hospital the A to L Petitions Committee added th** following rider to a report presented to the House yesterday: “That the matter of providing skilled supervision for all classes of excavating and quarrying work be considered by the Minister in charge of mental hospitals in order that accidents might be prevented.” Life-saving Awards At a meeting of the New Zealand Council of the Life Saving Society, the result was announced of the Wigram Shield contest. The shield is awarded to the centre having the greatest number of awards, to be worked out on an average basis in comparison with population. The result was:—Wanganui, 579 awards. 1,711$ points, giving an average of 23.7 per 1,000 of population. 1 Taranaki, 327 awards. 1,046 points. 16 s per 1,000. 2; Wellington, 846 awards, 2,953 points, 11.6 per 1,000, 2; Canter bury, 671 awards, 2.343 points, S.B per 1,000. 4: Otago. 463 awards, 1,1745 points, 6.1 per 1.000, 5; Auckland. 552 awards, 2,375 points, 5.8 per 1.000. 6.
