STORMS IN COOK STRAIT
MATANGI SUFFERS DAMAGE OTHER SHIPPING DELAYED Press Association WELLINGTON, Today. Terrific southerly winds and high seas were encountered in the Strait last night by the Matangi engaged on the Wellington-Nelson run. The Matangi was on her way to Wellington and frequently shipped heavy seas on her after deck and some empty oil drums were carried over the side, part of the railing to which they were lashed suffering damage. In the vicinity of the Brothers, two portholes on the starboard side near the waterline were smashed and water poured through into the second-class bathrooms, parts of the passenger accommodation being* flooded. Water also fouid its way into the dining saloon on the main deck. Temporary repairs were effected and the steamer arrived five hours late. The Ngaio took 12 hours to cross to Picton instead of the usual four. At one stage it took her six and a-half hours to cover IS miles. The Wahine arrived up to time from Lyttelton after a rough trip, and the Maori was 25 minutes late at Lyttelton.
