GIRL RIDER KILLED
INQUEST ON TRAGEDY AT WANGANUI HORSE FALLS IN STREET (From Our Own Correspondent) WANGANUI, Today. An inquest on the death in hospital on Mbnday of Ethel Elizabeth Ryland, aged 16, was opened in Wanganui yesterday before Mr. J. H. Salmon, S.M.. coroner. The girl died as the result of injuries received when a horse fell on her in I J outini Street on Saturday afternoon. A jockey, Maurice Moran, said that an Saturday afternoon he was taking a harness mare through Jellieoe Street to a paddock. The mare had on a cover and headstall, to which was attached a leading-rope. The girl cam© up to him and said that she would take the mare and he went into another paddock nearby to get a second horse. When he returned he saw her riding the mare down Jellieoe Street. She was trotting and as he watched her she turned into Poutini Street. He followed her and then saw a crowd at the Corner of Papatu Street, later being told that the mare had fallen and that the girl was injured. Verna Doris Beauchamp said she saw horse and girl coming down Papatu Street. She thought that the mare had bolted with the girl. When it reached Tinirau Street it turned to the right and in doing so slipped on the bitumen, falling on its right side* The girl fell under the horse and the animal then got up and dragged her across the road to the grass on her face. Witness attended her and sent for a doctor, who ordered the unconscious girl to be taken to the hospital. The inquest was adjourned at that stage to wait for the evidence of the doctor. •
