IDLE LAND IN OTAGO

GOVERNMENT ASKED TO RESUME LEASE ROOM FOR 40 FAMILIES (I'rom Our Own Correspondent) DUNEDIN, Today. A petition has been presented to the Government by residents of Cromwell and the surrounding district, asking that the State may resume the land held under lease by the Cromwell Development Company, covering several hundred acres known as the Cromwell Flats. The land was leased by the company 14 years ago for the purpose of obtaining water and hydro-electric rights, and to provide irrigation and open the land for closer settlement. It is, hosVever, still lying idle, and the company seems unable to dispose of it to settlers. It is estimated that if there was a sufficient supply of water, the land would accommodate at least 40 families.
