FRESH WATER FISH
ASSISTING RESEARCH WORK ACCLIMATISATION SOCIETY Complete approval of the research work regarding: fresh water fish that is being carried out in New Zealand was expressed by the council of the Auckland Acclimatisation Society at its meeting last evening:. It was decided to support the work financially and to furnish whatever relative information was at the council’s disposal. The subject was brought under the notice of the council by a letter from Mr. L. O. H. Tripp, president of the New Zealand Acclimatisation Societies’ Associtaion, which stated that the Wellington Society had founded a fellowship for fresh water fish research in 1927 and that the North Canterbury Society had arranged for similar work to be done. A large amount of investigation as to fish food and the sources of its supply had been carried out. A beginning had also been made in ascertaining the relative abundance of fish food organisms in waters of given characteristics.
The letter*continued:—“lt is felt that other societies would probably like to join in the investigations, and it might be possible to establish a joint fund sufficient to carry out research on a larger scale. It is suggested that a New Zealand Research Committee should be formed to review progress and make recommendations for future work. Each society would have its own research sub-committee, which would give all possible assistance in the furthering of research. A research laboratory could be established as soon as funds were available.” The extent of the council’s assistance to this work was left in the hands of its delegates to the coming conference of acclimatisation societies at Wellington.
