MERCY RECOMMENDED
FATHER’S SERIOUS OFFENCE A recommendation to mercy on account of previous good character and the care and attention he had accorded his family was made by the jury in the Supreme Court yesterday in convicting Norman McMillan, a Dargaviile motor mechanic of indecent assault on his 11-year-old child. The offences were alleged to have been committed on June 15 and July 12. when the child’s mother was away on a holiday. The little girl gave definite evidence of the improper conduct toward her but her accusations were denied by her father. However, he had admitted to the police before he was arrested that he would plead guilty to get the whole thing over, though he knew nothing about it. Accused admitted having consumed half a bottle of brandy one night and did not have any reco.lection of what occurred when he retired.
The jury was out more than four heurs, and found McMil’an guilty. In remanding accused until Wednesday for sentence, his ■ pr cd to give the recommendation most serious consideration.
