Notes from the Council Chamber The first item, at last evening’s City Council meeting, was the reference by Cr. Ellen Melville to the proposal to plant the avenue leading to the War Memorial Museum with Japanese cedars. Cr. Melville declared that it was regrettable that New Zealand trees were not in view for the planting. At present the question is not before the council. « * « Something akin to a gem from Mrs. Malaprop came when a councillor amused the meeting by seconding a motion—“pro tern.” No one asked just what the effect of the seconding would be. “As far as I am aware, no letter or application has gone from the City Council to the Transport Board with regard to tickets or passes,” stated Cr. J. R. Lundon. “There may have been verbal communication.” * * * Several citizens in the gallery were passing comment during one of Cr. Lundon’s addresses. Their behaviour brought a sharp rebuke from the Mayor. “I will not tolerate tittering and giggling,” he said. “If the offenders continue, they will have to get out.” * • 9 A request by the Auckland Rowing Club for permission to use the City’s coat-of-arms, together with crossed cars, as the club’s badge, was declined. ♦ * Authority was given for the expenditure of £47 10s in the setting back of the south-western corner of the Grafton Road approach to Grafton Bridge. At question time the Town Clerk informed Cr. Ellen Melville that the Department of Justice had decided to hand over the small plot of ground adjacent to the police station to the council for the purpose of improving the Princes Street-O’Rourke Street corner.
