Councillor Resips After Money Dispute
TROUBLE AT TAKAPUNA CR. A. M. SEAMAN’S ACTION As the result of a dispute over financial principles in the Takapuna Borough Council on Wednesday evening, Cr. A. M. Seaman has delivered his resignation to the borough clerk, Mr. H. Bowden. fpHE dispute arose over a proposal to encroach upon next year's revenue to the extent of £2,000 for the purpose of unemployment relief. This relief work was originally to have been spread over two years, but the council was later notified that the Government subsidy would only be paid on money spent before December 31, 1929. The Deputy-Mayor, Mr. J. W. Hayden, secured an extension of time until March 31 and suggested that, in order to complete the full scheme, £2,000 be allocated from next year’s estimates. Cr. Seaman condemned the proposal as being unsound financially. “Mr. Hayden has no idea what he is talking about in putting forward such a dangerous scheme,” he said. Cr. Hayden, however, retorted that the whole method of finance had been favourably received by the Audit Office when he was last in Wellington. After considerable discussion a division was taken and the motion to anticipate next year’s estimates was carried by six to four, the voting being as follows: —For, Crs. Hayden, Guiniven, Titchener, Wilkie, Hart and Powell; against, the Mayor, and Crs. Seaman, Colegrove and Algie.
