TRAFFIC OUTLET SCHEME

KARANGAHAPE ROAD PROTEST NO TRAFFIC CONGESTION An emphatic protest against the proposed Belgium Street traffic outlet scheme comes from the Karangahape Road Business Promotion Society. This was embodied in a resolution to the City Council at its meeting last evenirig. The society also takes strong exception to the proposed subway under Karangahape Road, the opinion being expressed that the scheme should first be submitted to the new City Engineer, appointment of whom is shortly to be made. The society’s main objection is that there is no serious traffic congestion in Karangahape Road warranting expenditure on this and the Day Street scheme. A further resolution states that if anything is done it should be considered in collaboration with the Government town planner. The Town Planning Committee will make a report. NO IMMEDIATE ACTION In this connection Cr. H. P. Burtou moved that the council’s previous resolution holding over consideration of the scheme until the appointment of the new engineer be rescinded. He believed that the council would not commit itself by passing the resolution. In view of the fact that the new engineer would not be definitely appointed until November 6, and, were he to come from overseas, there would be a further delay in arrival, the urgency was great. If traffic congestion became worse, the council would be blamed. There was noth ing to prevent the council from obtaining expert opinion immediately. Cr. Grey Campbell seconded. “One reason for paying a high salary to the new engineer is that he is expected to have a knowledge of traffic solution,” Cr. G. W. Hutchison said. “The scheme will be for all time, and there is no harm in waiting.” Cr. A. J. Entriean supported Cr. Hutchison’s views, and the motion was lost.
