AUSTRIAN BRUNETTE IS BEAUTY QUEEN Miss Lisa Goldarbeiter, ot' Austria, was crowned “Miss Universe’’ (which means the Beauty Queen o£ World) at the “International Pageant of Pulchritude’’ in Galveston, Texas, last mouth. “Pulchritude’’ is Latin-American for beauty. Six of the seven judges voted for Miss Goldarbeiter, the seventh choosing Miss Demetrescue, who represented Rumania. There were ten European competitors in tho pageant, including Miss England—represented by Miss Bennie Dicks. Miss Irene Ahlberg was Miss United States. All the girls paraded in evening dress and then in bathiDg costume. With downcast eyes and dimpled cheeks the dark-skinned Austrian beauty received the award as her due. Her brown hair, blue eyes, and slender figure, coupled with a certain refinement in her bearing, made th’e work of the jtidges easy. She wins 2,000 dollars and a gold and silver plague. Her name, “Goldarbeiter,” is good Austro-Germau for “gold-chaser.” Miss Ahlberg, of New York, received 1,000 dollars. Another American girl got 500 dollars. Of those awarded 100 dollars each Miss Rumania was the only European candidate.
