BIRKENHEAD COUNCIL
The Birkenhead Borough Council held its fortnightly meeting last evening, the Mayor, Mr. J. i\ McPhail, presiding. A letter was received from the executive of the Ratepayers’ and Residents’ Association suggesting that houses in the more thickly populated area be numbered, also that glass-fronted notice boards be provided for council notices and those of recognised local organisations. It was suggested the boards should be placed at the wharf Highbury Corner. The request was referred to tho Works Committee. The association’s request for the use of the Council Chambers for meetings was declined. A letter from Mr. B. ,P. Hopkins, secretary of Birkenhead School Committee, requesting the desirability of teopening the question of providing, swimimng baths in the borough, was deferred for future consideration. In connection with the proposed dental clinic for the district, the Mayor agreed to convene and preside at a public meeting to consider raising funds for the project. A subsidy was received from the Treasury amounting to £312 14s 2d on the rates collected for 1325-23. The Waitemata Electric-Power Board advised that from fuly 1 the commission payable in respect of all consumers’ accounts collected by the council will be increased from 15 per cent, to 2J per cent This commission, which had previously been iivided between the office staff, is now to be paid into the council’s funds. The council approved of the proposed alterations in connection with the Sunday morning: vehicular boats, which would then provide for a half-hourly service with the passengrer boats. It was decided to instal a clock in the Council Chambers.
