ON THE GREEN

Bowls and Bowlers

(By

JACK HIGH.

Not for many a long day has so much interest been centred in a rink game as was evidenced on Saturday, when the game between the West End rink and the successful Ponsonby rink was played to determine the fate of the Edwin Stars. The Ponsonby team had already won eleven games on end, and the fact that the challengers comprised three members of the Dominion champion rink made it apparent that the holders would be severely tested, to retain the coveted trophies. Ponsonby was represented by Allen, Richardson, Somervell, and Parsons, while C. Hardley, Cox, Bremner and Irving Clarke represented West End.

It was anticipated that the West End rink would be skipped by W. Bremner, but on this occasion the Dominion champion skip was found supporting Clarke. The green, although not keen, was in good order, but, as was only to be expected, somewhat on the slow side.

Contrary to expectations, the game did not provide a close contest. The first head was played three times, Bremner burning the head twice. On the replay, Ponsonby scored four, and continued to have the best of the play for the first half of the game, the score being 16—5 at the conclusion of the eleventh head. After the fifteenth head. West End was nine points in arrear, the score being 20. 11. The challengers had the better of the remaining head, but made their effort too late, Ponsonby scoring four on the nineteenth head, and making its position secure. The game ended; Ponsonby, 24; West End, 17. The result of this game furnished another illustration of the value of team work. The Ponsonby players combined splendidly, and there was always somebody on the job. On the other hand, the West End rink did not display the form of which it is capable. There is no doubt that the win was well deserved. The Denison Pins again changed

hands on Saturday, when J. Stewart, J. H. Garlick, R. J. Allelv, J. Thomas, representing Mount Albert, defeated S. F. Hazard, C. A. Lamb, C. H. de Launay, and T. R. George (Epsom) by tho narrow margin of one point, after an exciting contest. This game was played on the Hillsborough green, which was in excellent order. After the twentieth head, the score was 20 all, and the final proved somewhat sensational. Epsom was holding the winning shot, and Allely, with his first bowl, drove, and left Epsom lying three. De Launay drew another, and Allely retrieved the situation by trailing the kitty to an absolutely secure position.

The match between the Nomads and the Mount Eden Club, which was .to have been played on Saturday, had to be postponed owing to the Mount Eden green being unplayable. The Nomads journeyed to the Hillsboro’ green and were hospitably received by the president, Wr. E. A. Pearce. Messrs. H. K. Clayton and W. S. Hardley rasponded for the visitors. The game resulted in the Nomads being defeated by fifteen points. On Saturday next the Nomads will play Rawhiti Club.

An interesting game lias been arranged for Saturday next between the Carlton Club and twelve rinks of old boys of the Auckland Grammar School. The latter will comprise old boys who attended the school from 1569-i896, and in selecting the rinks the pupils of the same year have been grouped together wherever possible. The following teams have been selected to represent the Old Boys:—F. Prime, H. F. Forder, A. Coutts, O. Nicholson; 11. Coombe, J. A. Pen nail igan, W. T. Kenderdine. C. C. Baker; L. Lewis, P. B. Darby, S. W. Somerfield, H. W. Brookes; R. J Lusher, W. Winks, A. I-I. Keesing, C. G. Brookes; A. M. Bell, J. Blades, J. R. Lundon, S. J. Harbutt; W. M. Jackson, W. R. C Walker, A. H. Yeoman, G. Martin; T. C. Schnackenberg, A. P. Crowe, G. 11. Plummer, T S. Bassett; J. A. Fernandez. C. A. Semadeni, G. S. Kissling, J. C E. Kissling: H. V. Johnson, R. G. Speight. H. J. D. Mahon, E. Clarke; J. W. Williamson, H. A. Darrow, E. R. Allen, W. Bigelow; A. Peak, R. H. Walton, G. L. Gladding, A. R. Graham; D. Winks, E. Rewcastle, A. R. Gatland, M. Walker.

It is to be hoped that the Dominion Council will be able to arrange tile itinerary of the Canadian bowling team so as to enable the visitors to visit the North Auckland centre and Tauranga. The Canadian team is to visit New Zealand early in 1930. Hitherto Whangarei and Tauranga have not been fortunate enough to have a visit from touring teams and the bowling clubs in both these districts are approaching the Dominion Council with this object in view.
