FAMOUS SEA MYSTERY
MARIE CELESTE STORY RECALLED Strangest of all sea stories is that of the Marie Celeste, a trim and fleet American brig found abandoned near Gibraltar on December 4, 187*2. She sailed from New York with a full crew' and ten passengers, none of whom w r as ever seen again. "While the British barquentine, Dei Gratia was nearing Gibraltar, her captain sighted a ship w r ith all sails set, following an aimless course. On investigating he found it was the Marie Celeste. The brig was in perfect order from masthead to keelson, yet not a soul was on board. Every instrument and accessory was in its xfface, apparently the stores were unbroached, and no boats or gear were missing. The dining table in the saloon Tvas set for a meal, the china and cutlery being in faultless array. Officially this amazing problem has never been solved. Countless theories, ranging from mutiny to the story of an attack by a giant Mediterranean devil-fish, have been advanced by -writers.
