LOST FROM TOFUA
NORWEGIAN TWICE ATTEMPTED TO COMMIT SUICIDE SHIP’S OFFICERS NOT TOLD Some curious circumstances surround the loss of a man from the Tofua on her voyage from Apia, Samoa. He was a Norwegian named Holst, who had twice attempted to commit suicide in Samoa, but . nothing of this was told the officers of the ship when he was taken on board. Holst joined the vessel at Apia and was booked for New Zealand. He was last seen at about 4 o'clock on the day the ship sailed. At 5 o’clock, the second-class meal hour, there was no sign of the man and a search was made. As soon as he was reported missing the captain turned the Tofua about and a search was made, but there was no sign of Holst. According to a resident of Apia, Holst had been in Samoa for two years. He was a deserter from a Norweigian ship. While in Samoa he had twice attempted to commit suicide and had. been put in close confinement. When he was allowed to leave the mandated territory the ship’s officers were not notified of his former behaviour. None of the passengers saw him go overboard.
