PAPAKURA TOWN BOARD

The regular meeting of the Papakura Town Board was held last evening, Mr. James McCall presiding. An offer from W. Springer and T. "W. Hammond to rent the railway reserve for* grazing purposes was referred to The Reserves Committee for consideration. On the grounds that the local business houses were suffering a loss as the result of the activities of hawkers in the town, the Papakura Chamber of Commerce requested the board to restrain their operations by means of substantially increasing the licence fees. The finance committee was asked to report upon the subject. The finance committee reported that there was a debit balance of £873 17s 3d in the general fund, and that subsidies and other amounts due by the Main Highways Board would reduce j this sum by some £412. The recommendation of the Reserves Committee that application be made for a subsidy of £IOO on a £1 for £1 basis for the purpose of meeting the unemployment problem, was discussed. The work contemplated is the development of the central reserve on the Great South Road. It was decided to refer the matter back to the committee for further consideration. The Traffic Control Committee reported that a further batch of motorists which had transgressed .speed bylaws was being prosecuted.
