EXPENSIVE GRAZING
“LONG ACRE” CHARGES A farmer of Pakuranga, Mary Fleming, discovered at the Otahuhu Police Court yesterday that allowing cattle to wander on the highways is not a payable proposition. Mr. Connelly, ranger for the Manukau County Council, said that, on May IS, defendant had allowed two cows to wander on the Pakuranga highways. She was also charged with allowing a bull to wander on the main road on the same day. The ranger stated that he had impounded the cows, but the bull was too ferocious to deal with. He had had previous trouble with defendant, having impounded her cattle on five previous occasions, 34 head being dealt with on one occasion. For allowing the cows to wander, defendant was convicted and fine £1 and ordered to pay costs 10s and solicitor's fees £1 Is. On the other charge she was convicted and fined £1 10s. and ordered to pay court costs 10s, ranger’s expenses 10s and solicitors fees £1 Is. a’ total of £5 12s.
