ADMIRAL EBERLE DEAD
FORMER CHIEF OF AMERICAN NAVAL OPERATIONS (Australian and N.Z. Press Association) WASHINGTON, Saturday The death has occurred of Rear-Ad-miral Eberle, retired, who was formerly Chief of Naval Operations, aged 64. Admiral Eberle’s death resulted from an infection which developed from an injury he received over 30 years ago, when he was struck by the tiller of a small boat, and his eyeglasses were driven into his right ear. Rear-Admiral Edward Walter Eberle was born in Texas in 1864, and was at the United States Naval Academy. He served in the Spanish-American War, in the Philippine insurrection, 1899, and with the Asiatic Fleet, 1899. He held various executive offices and was superintendent of the Naval Academy, 1915-19. He was in command of the Pacific Fleet in 1919, with the rank of admiral. He was made a rear-ad-miral in 1918.
