NARROW BUT FIERCE
STORM AT WAIUKU POULTRY FARM DAMAGED (From Our Own Correspondent) WAIUKU, Today. A storm of unusual severity struck Fernleigh, near Waiuku, about noon yesterday, causing considerable damage. The path of the storm, which was accompanied by heavy rain, was only about 100yds wide and everything in its track received a severe buffeting. Mr. F. Fitchett’s poultry farm received the full strength of the gale. A fowlhouse and sheds were wrecked and a piece of timber was blown through a window of the house. Portions of roofing iron were carried on to the power lines interrupting the service. The chimneys of the house were broken off, also those of Mr. McEwan nearby. The latter’s front door was also broken.
At the butter factory tiles were stripped from the roof and a skylight torn off, and cream cans were blown hundreds of yards away. Haystacks in the path of the storm were unroofed and many trees were broken or blown down. Several fowls were lost, but no one was injured. A trap-shed at Mrs. Hosking, Senior’s, had the roof removed and the harness was carried several yards away. Mrs. J. R. Eddy’s cowshed was wrecked, while Mr. M. G. Brown has his shed removed to his neighbour’s paddock. A few of the large electric light poles were shifted four or five inches at their base and several of the wires were broken. Good work was done by the power board, which had the electric service in running order shortly after 5 p.m.
