BRIGHT ENTERTAINMENT

NORTHCOTE CHILDREN ASSIST UNEMPLOYED RESIDENTS’ GENEROUS RESPONSE The juvenile pupils of Miss E. Gunman gave a very successful entertainment in the Palais Theatre, Northcote, last evening to a full house, the financial proceeds being devoted to the relief of unemployment in the borough. Much of the success of the evening was due to Mr. 31. Shaw, organiser, and to the efforts of the women’s committee, Mesdames If. Shaw, A. Hurley, .T. Brennan and E. Gunman, and the Misses E. and V. Gunman. Mrs. A. Hurley was the accompanist. During the interval Mr. H. Weaver, deputy-Mayor of Northcote, apologised to the audience for the absence of the Mayor, and thanked all those responsible for their efforts and assured them that the amount raised would be subsidised by the council. At the conclusion. Mr. H. Shaw introduced Mr. John Broady, one of the old residents of the borough, who presented the Misses E. and V. Gunman and Mrs. A. Hurley with beautiful bouquets, and each of the children performers with a box of chocolates. Mr. G. IT. Edwards, lessee of the theatre, also was thanked for the free use of the building. After the entertainment pupils and friends enjoyed supper, provided by Mrs. Shaw and Mrs. J. Brennan, in Brennan’s Tearooms, adjoining the hall. The following contributed items:—Misses Betty Birch, Betty Watson, Betty Broady, Pat Hurley, Janette Jviddel, Peggy, Pat. Hilda Danne, Peggy Brennan, Vera Bennison, Rona Brennan, Joyce Howland, Edna Pearce and Nancy Borrows: and Masters Jack Holland, Rex Pearce, Leon McFetridge, J. Gunman, Ivan Dunn, Roy Johnston, Lawrence Pearce, Leslie Williams, Douglas Broady, Heather Crawford and Norman Dunn.
