Wonderful Market Waiting for N.Z.
TRADE WITH THE EAST MR. WILLIAM HEUGHAN'S VIEWS A wonderful market for New Zealand goods and produce is to be found in the East, says Mr. William Heughan, the Scottish baritone. In every city and every club he visited on the whole of his tour he found business men who were eager to know something of the Dominion. “There is an enormous market waiting for this country.” said Mr. Heughan. “If only the transport could be arranged it would mean a great thing to this Dominion. In China particularly I feel sure the country which gets on to the market first will have an enormous advantage. It only wants a man who will organise direct shipping to the East to capture a wonderful marKet.” Mr. Heughan, who is making one of his periodical visits to New Zealand, is a man who puts Empire even before his work. He has sung in every principal town and every city in the British Emnire, and is the only artist of any standing who is touring the world as a free lance. His reputation as an Empire builder has grown with each tour, and on hiy last visit to Canada he was asked to stand for Parliament for one of the Ottawa seats. The Canadians claim that he is fair and unbiased, without anv axes to grind. “During my talks at the various clubs throughout the East I have always put New Zealand first when speaking of the Empire,” he said yesterday. “I don’t say that because I am iu New Zealand at present, but because I am so genuinely fond of this lovely country. During my recent visit to Australia I was asked what country of the Empire I preferred and I had to tell them ‘New Zealand, and after that British Columbia.’ ” Mr. Heughan is accompanied by his wife. Miss Gladys Sayer, and Miss Maude Bell, cellist. Their tour of the Dominion will open shortly.
