BEEF MARKET FIRM WESTFIELD SALE WESTFIKLP, 2.3 u p.m. j An aggregate yarding of between 700 and 800 head of tat cattle at Westfield today met with a steady sale at late rajes. Best ox beef made up to a hundred; best cow and heifer up to 335. The ox beef yarding:, comprising approximately 360 head, was drawn from most parts of the province. The quality, generally, was good, but heavy weight steers were well in the minority. Light to medium weight steers predominated. Bidding throughout was steady, with the usual tendency to pay premium prices for extra well finished young cattle. Buyers for the bigger butchering firms took the greatest part of thq offering. Exporters took little interest in tlie sale. Top price of the day was secured for a line of 16 light to heavy weight well finished steers on account W C. Ring, Hinuera, the top priced pen going to T. Baster, Ponsonby. Eight well finished heavy prirpe steers on account J. Hanks, Xe Aroh.a, also made up to £l6 10s. the tops going to E. Wilson. Eden Terrace. Seven well finished medium to heavy weight steers on account P. Corbett, Hikutaia, made to £ls 17s 6d. Twenty-four light to big framed extra well finished cattle on account G. Hastie, Papatoetoe, made from £ll 17s 6d to £l6 ss. One truck of medium weight steers on account Rudd Bros., Paparata made up to £l4 10s. Sixteen steers on account IT. Ivelland. Waipipi, made from' £l3 10s to £l4 ss. Fourteen light .to medium weight steers on account P. Walters, Waiuku, made from £ll 17s 6d to £l4 17s Od. Eighteen choice quality small to medium framed steers on account Goldsflnch Bros., Toneatua, made frojn. £l3 10s to £l4 15s. Twenty-four medium weight steers on account Ngapuhi Estate made from £l2 10s to £l4 7s 6d. Fourteen well finished but not exceptionally big framed steers on account M. Hardipg, Mount Wellington, made up to £ 15. Six medium weight steers on account C. Abernethy, Waiuku, made lo £l4 10s. The market for slightly above an average yarding of calves held very Urm at late rates. There was a sliortof well finished big framed calves, but this was made up for by a big increase in the number of small and fresh dropped sorts. Runners made up to £7 16s: heavy veaJers made to £5 3s 6d; small and fresh dropped calves from 7s to 30s. The cow and heifer yarding was taade up of a mixed assortment, with a big percentage of inferior finished ca ttle. Several lots of extra choice young station cattle came forward, however. An extra choice quality y°ung heifer on account of a Waikato v omlor topped the market at £!«>» to G. H. Crang, of Karangahape Road. Two trucks of big boned solid Priuie heifers on account of Trewin ?rothers, Marohemo, made to £l3 15s, gr a pen which went to R. and W. Rellaby, The line was one of the best in the yards for some time. An average yarding of sheep comprised a big percentage of well fiu«ned heavy prime wetherrs.
