SCENE OF DISASTER

FEW FISSURES ON SOLID GROUND COMMITTEE INVESTIGATES Press Association NELSON, Today. Today Dr. C. E. Adams, Government Seismologist, said that, although after investigation the first estimate of the general intensity of the shock as determined by reports of local observers may be somewhat reduced in the rvelson district, he was of the opinion that the intensity of the shock in Murchison reached 10 on the scale. Members of the committee agreed with Dr. Adams that the effect on buildings in Murchison was certainly disastrous. In a few instances buildings had not suffered, and it was extraordinary how they had escaped. It was remarked that very few fissures were found on solid ground. It was on alluvial ground where most of the damage had occurred. Dr. Adams and members of the committee pointed out that at present they were only collecting evidence and were not prepared to make a considered statement. In due course the committee will make a report to the Institute of Architects, and Dr. Adams will report to the Government.
