BANNED IN WELLINGTON
‘ALL QUIET ON THE WESTERN FRONT” PUBLIC LIBRARY’S ACTION tSpecial to THE HUS) WELLINGTON, Today. Two months ago the Wellington Public Library authorities banned Remarque’s book of the Great War, “All Quiet on the Western Front.” •|T is not a book which should be c.lr- -*■ cula-ted freely to the public,” said Vlr. J. N. Norrie, the librarian, on Saturday, in referring to this decision. “I read it some time ago and formed the opinion that it should not go on the shelves. I was supported in that bv some members of the City Council and others. The language in the book is coarse and lurid, just as used by soldiers. as those who served know. I think our duty to the public must prevent this book being placed on our shelves for general reading. “The plea lias been put forward that the book would tend to stop wars, but ; &s far as I know, it has not been taken up by the Wellington branch of the League of Nations Union.”
