ENTRANCE TO CITY
PROPOSAL TO UTILISE DOCK SITE NEW YORK’S EXAMPLE Citing the case of Battery Point, X'ew York, where there was a beautitied area in the heart of an industrial waterfront a petition presented by a deputation from the Auckland Town Planning Association to the Auckland Harbour Board was discussed at last evening’s meeting of the executive committee of the association. The petition stated that the loss of revenue to the board would be inconsiderable, and in an age when it was being realised that beauty had a commercial value, they hoped for earnest consideration of their suggestion. Members of the association said that part of the old dock site was admirably suited for the erection of some suitable entrance to the city. The association considered that a suitable entrance might well be erected upon the portion of the old dock site facing Quay Street., and that buildings erected on the remainder of the site should be of uniform architecture to harmonise with the scheme decided upon for the decorative portion. The matter was referred to the publicity committee. Messrs. K. Grierson and W. H. Gummer were appointed to attend meetings of the Harbour Bridge Association. The secretary, Mr. E. D. Wilkinson, tendered his resignation, and Mr. G. Hill was elected to fill the vacancy.
