BANNED !
Great War Novel Kept From Aucklanders "ALL QUIET ON WESTERN FRONT” "All Quiet on the Western Front,” the German novel of the war, has been banned from the Auckland Public Library. 'VfO book has ever been more inquired for at the library than this novel by the German, Erich Maria Remarque, but the authorities hold that its general circulation is impossible owing to coarseness of some of its expression and some of the subjects mentioned. Critical opinion is unanimous in greeting "All Quiet on the Western Front” as the greatest novel of the war, but for the true recital of a common soldier’s experiences, a certain degree of coarseness was necessary to give the narrative its truthful colouring, and it is this that has been objected to. Words not in polite usage are certainly printed, but the simple frankness of the epic story Is enough to turn the minds of all but the prurient from over-long consideration of them. General Sir lan Hamilton, speaking at the Gallipoli Day Dinner in London, said that “All Quiet on the Western Front” had definitely killed the idea of war as an adventure. “The author deserves the Nobel Peace Prize 10 years in succession,” he said. "Sometimes the story is revolting in the course of its simplicity, but It carries the stamp of truth in every line.”
