COMBINED ASSAULT
♦ LANDLORD ATTACKED WITH AXE HANDLE | COUPLE FINED £2 EACH The story of a combined attack made upon him by his tenants, a man and a woman, was told at the Police Court this morning by Andrew Ross when Sydney Jones and Mrs. Vincent were charged with assault. Neither defendant appeared, but Jones sent a letter explaining that the affair was the result of a disagreement about some fowls, and that Mrs. Vincent had been acting in self-defence. Ross’s story was that the attack was due to ill-feeling caused by his refusal to allow defendants to depart from the conditions of their lease. He had gone over to the dairy farm at New Lynn where Mrs. Vincent had atj tacked him with an axe handle, bruisi ing him extensively. Jones had done his best to get at witness also and had | tried to kick him. “Both the man j and the woman were using bad TanI guage,” concluded witness, j “If they will not take the trouble i to- appear they must take what is I coming to them,” commented Mr. F. i K. Hunt, S.M., in fining defendants £2 I each.
