EMDEN’S VISIT

ENTERTAINMENT FOR CREW PREPARATIONS IN HAND Arrangements are well in hand for the official welcome to the crew of the German cruiser Emden, which is due «yt Auckland on July 26, from Thursday Island. A S the vessel rounds North Head a salute of 13 guns will be fired from Fort Cautley. No salute will he given by the warships in port, as the Emden, being in command of a captain and not an admiral, is not entitled to one. j On berthing she will be hoarded by the Hon. P. A. de la Perrelle, Minister of Internal Affairs, who will extend a welcome on behalf of the Government. Lieutenant-Commander J. D. Prentice, H.M.S. Philomel, will represent the Navy, and LieutenantColonel J. E. Duigan, General Staff officer, the Northern Military Command. The Mayor, Mr. George Baildon, will represent Auckland City, and Mr. M. H. Wynyard, the Harbour Board. The German Consul, Mr. W. Penseler, W'ill also make a call. The calls will later be returned by the officer commanding the cruiser. The Emden w'ill he in Auckland for nine days and a round of entertainment and sight-seeing will be provided. The Government will place two motor-cars at the disposal of the commander and officers, and a party of officers will be the Government's guests at Rotorua and . aitomo. Free passes will be available for both officers and men on the railways. The entertainment committee is arranging for officers and men to he taken for a motor drive round the city, and on June 28 a reception and ball for the ship's officers will he held in Scot Hall. A concert for the men will be given at the Seamen’s Institute tHe following Tuesday. The provision of further entertainment and privileges will he discussed by the entertainment committee this evening, the Rotary Club at today’s luncheon, and the Transport Board tomorrow.
