£480,000 FOR STATE
HARMSWORTH DEATH DUTIES NOTHING FOR CHARITIES Reed. 11.25 a.m. LONDON, Thursday. The late Sir Hildebrand Harmsworth explained in his will that the “terrible taxation” had entirely crushed his desire to benefit charities. The estate pays £480.000 in death, duties. A British Official Wireless message says:—Sir Hildebrand Harmsworth, formerly proprietor of the "Globe” newspaper, and a brother of the late Lord Northcliffe and Lord Rothermere, left £1,443,000. He left onetenth of his estate to Merton College, Oxford, to create five scholarships. A noteworthy condition regarding the scholarships is that they shall be available only for British subjects who are Protestants, and whose parents and paternal grandfather and greatgrandfather were both British-born subjects and Protestants. The scholarships will be of very considerable value, as after payment of duties it would appear that the net sum of about £90,000 will be available to endow them, giving them an annual value of about £9OO each.
