SUNSHINE AT ELLERSLIE
Winter Meeting Opened SEATOWN WINS CORNWALL DELIGHTFUL weather favoured the opening of the A.K.C. Great Northern meeting at Ellerslie today, and a huge crowd was present, the lawns and stands being thronged. The course was soft after mid-week rain, nevertheless it provided good going. Taneriri sprang a mild surprise by winning the first division of the Jervois Handicap in impressive -fashion. Standfast, who had been threatening to win a race for some little time, came to "light by scoring in the second division of the Jervois Handicap, being at a nice price. Two novices to chasing, in Kauri Park and King’s Guard, fought out a desperate finish in the Green Lane Steeplechase, the former getting a narrow verdict. H. Dulieu was on the winner, while his brother, L. Dulieu, rode the second horse. Following are the results:—
The Penrose Hurdles was a chapter of accidents, seven of the 13 starters falling or losing their riders, one horse, Ripon Abbey, breaking a fetlock and being destroyed. Prince Lu gave a great exhibition of jumping, leading all the way to score comfortably.
Mister Gamp won the Great Northern Hurdles in great style, taking charge half a mile from home to score very easily. Roman Abbey put up a good fight to get second money, with Kawini and Mangani fighting out third place. It was a remarkably fine performance and stamped Mister Gamp as a hurdler well above the average. Red Fuchsia, the favourite, did not go far, falling at the third fence.
