OTAKI MEETING WIN FOR SECOND THOUGHT (Special to THE SUN) OTAKI, Today. The weather was glorious today for the first day’s racing at Otaki. The course was holding. Results: TARARUA HURDLES Of £150; li miles 7 LADY GAY, 9.11, C. McGovern .. 1 8— SNEERER, 9.0 2 3 MODERN, 9.0 3 Scratched: Gambler, Fine Acre. Won by three lengths; two lengths between second and third. Time, 3.1 1-5. Red Bank was a firm favourite for the Tararua Hurdles, but his backers had but a brief run, for he fell at the first fence. Sneerer went to the front from Lady Gay, Peshwa, General Wai and Pantagruel. There was little change through the straight and into the back, where General Wai fell. Crossing the top, Modern moved up, but Lady Gay assumed charge on entering the straight and, with the final hurdle down, went on to win by three lengths from Sneerer, who hung on long enough to beat Modern by two Zarene, Grattan, Naselle and Rounfollowed home by Sir Moment and Rakauponga. KUKU MAIDEN Of £100; 6 furlongs 4 ZARENE (J. Barry), 8.0 1 4—NASSELLE, 8.10 2 7—GRATTAN, 8.10 3 Scr.: Ahumai, Animated, Fortalice, Golden Flower, Plane, Lachmea, Bon Acre. Won by three lengths, two lengths between second and third. Time, 1.18 3-5. With seven defections, Kuku Maiden was restricted to one division, Zarene being preferred to Lucre and Trench Raid. Zarene was smartest to . begin from Naselle, Roundelay and Grattan, and they raced in that order to the turn for home, where Lucre, Trench Raid and Catuna were attending Zarene, Grattan, Masselle and Roundelay. Zarene and Nasselle were well clear at the. distance and the favourite was, untroubled to win by three lengths with two lengths separating Nasselle and Grattan. Trench Raid and King Hal were next to finish. RAUKAWA CUP Of £350; If miles. 2—LADY LIMOND, 7.7, C. Davies .. 1 1— PAITONU, 9.0 2 7—BRIAR ROOT, 7.0 .. .. 3 Scr.: Shining Armour, Shrewd. Won by four lengths, half a length between second and third. Time, 2.12 1-5. A good field of 14 runners competed for the Raukawa Cup, Shining Armour and Shrewd being the sole defections. Paitonu and Lady Limond were the public’s selection and they filled the first two places. Lady Limond and Kilbronsyth led through the straight from Borsalene, Merry Damon, Paitonu, Blimp and Imperial Spark. Approaching the five-furlong post the positions underwent changes. Lady Limond and Kilbronsyth were attended by Briar Root, Blimp, Borsalene, Merry Damon and Paitonu, but coming into the straight Briar Root and Lady Limond were together ahead of Paitonu, Kilbronsyth, Tresham and Merry Damon. In the run home Paitonu failed to reach Lady Limond, who won by four lengths, with Briar Root half a length ahead of Paitonu. Then came Tresham, Merry Damon and Henna. WAITOHU HACK Of £130; 6 furlongs 2 SECOND THOUGHT (T. Webster), 8.1 .. 1 6—LUCKY BAG, 7.8 2 3 GOLDEN FLOWER. 7.4 3 Scr.: Grand Acre, Guide Light. Won by half a length, two lengths between second and third. Time, 1.17 1-5. The defections of Grrand Acre and Guide Light left a dozen runners to contest the Waitohu Hack, in which Propaganda was preferred to Second Thought and Australis. Golden Flower was the smartest to begin, but was joined by Lucky Bag, and the pair led Propaganda, Second Thought and Dermod crossing the to£> and into the straight, where Lucky Bag went to the front. However, Seco:%d Thought lodged a challenge and got up to win by half a length, with Golden Flower two lengths back. Propaganda was fourth, with Dermod next. , OTAKI HACK Of £130; 1 mile and 55yds. 1— DISRANK, 8.8, L. G. Morris .... 1 2 GOLD BAG, 8.3 2 4 SKYRIDER, 8.2 3 All started. Won by half a length, one and a-half lengths between second and third. Time, 1.49 4-5.
