YOUTHFUL PILFERERS
STOLE FROM SWEET SHOPS “GALLIVANTING IN GANGS” Described by Chief-Detective Hammond as “really bad” and “gallivanting about in gangs,” four youths faced charges of theft at the Police Court this morning. QTUART HAsLLTT CROMPTON, an engraver aged 20, Edgar William Roberts, a labourer aged 17, lymond Augustus Walker, a blacksmith aged 21, and Anthony Howley, a bootmaker aged 19, were the young men charged. They were said to have stolen lollies valued at £1 from William Atherton on May 2S, and another haul valued at £2 5s from 1 eter Craig at Devonport on May 29. Crompton and Howley pleaded guilty and Roberts and Walker admitted receiving. “That will do nicely, though there is little between them,” remarked Chief-Detective Hammond. “They have been gallivanting about in gangs. They stole three jars of lollies from a shop and took tnem to Myers Park. There they put the lollies in their pockets and disposed of the jars. The same thing was done at Devonport, where the young men had gone and stayed at a boardinghouse all night.” Ou the suggestion of the ehieftective the t ur accused were remanded for a week.in custody. “We want to make all inquiries,” he said. It was mentioned that Roberts and Walker had already been on probation.
