MORE LAND WANTED

SETTLING WAIHI AREAS DEPUTATION TO MINISTER (From Oicr Own Correspondent) WAIHI, Monday. Several deputations waited on the Hon. G. W. Forbes, Minister of Lands and Agriculture, when he arrived here last evening. The chief deputation, which was headed by the Mayor, Mr. W. M. Wallnut, the chairman of the Chamber of Commerce, Mr. J. B. Beeclie, and the president of the Waihi branch of the New Zealand Farmers’ Union, Mr. L. G. Roberts, asked Mr. Forbes to throw open for settlement large areas of Crown lands between Waihi and Whangamata. It was explained to the Minister that at the time these lands were tied up all land around Waihi was' considered of little value for dairying or agricultural purposes, but since then it had been proved that with correct treatment Waihi .land was equal to any in the country for dairying purposes. It was pointed out that these lands could bo made of more benefit to the country and Waihi particularly than they could ever be as unused and locked up State reserves.

Mr. Forbes promised to have the question looked into by his departmental officers and hoped to be able to give a satisfactory reply. After receiving several minor deputations the Ministerial party proceeded to view the lands under discussion.
