MANY CHARGES PROVED “SAD SPECTACLE,” SAYS CHIEF JUSTICE Press Association WELLINGTON, Monday. “I have frequently heard judges say from their seats in this court j that the sentencing of prisoners is | the most unpleasant part, prob* ably the only unpleasant part, of a judge’s duty. Already I have found reason to feel the correct* ness of that statement." A sadder spectacle than that, of four young' men like you coming before this court on a, serious charge is difficult to conceive,” remarked the Chief Justice, the Hon. M. Myers, today, when Thomas Gordon, aged 21, charged with breaking and entering, theft and arson; George Wilfred Ryan aged 29; Richard Ryan, aged 26, and Hewitt Allen Capon, charged with receiving, appeared before him. His Honour said that probation was ou* of the question. Gordon was sentenced to five years' imprisonment with hard labour; George Ryan to two years’ imprisonment with hard labour; Richard Ryan, 18 months’ with hard labour, and Capon, 15 months’ imprisonment.
