CHURCH ST. CROSSING
ONE TREE HILL ROAD BOARD MEETS SUBWAY PROPOSAL Mr. J. Hardwicke was appointed chairman at the first meeting of the new One Tree Hill Road Board held last evening. A vote of appreciation was accorded Mr. J. Mathieson, who has resigned his seat on the board, owing to pressure of business. Nominations to fill the vacancy will close on May 18 and an election will be held if necessary on May 29. A deputation consisting of Messrs. R. G. Clark, Dobbie and Goldstine was appointed to meet the Minister of Railways, the Hon. W. 33. Taverner, during his pending visit to Auckland with a view to having a subway formed at the Church Street crossing. Advice was received from the Minister that the warning devices were installed in order of urgency. There were others which were considered more urgent than Church Street. This crossing was now classified among those at which compulsory stop signs would be erected.
The building inspector reported that 14 permits, involving £7,207, had been issued during the past two weeks.
It was decided that as many members as possible should attend the conference to be held on May 22 between the Director of Town-planning and local authorities. Mr. Dobbie said it was an important matter and he thought all members should attend. Commenting on the result of the Museum Council election of local body representatives, Mr. Clark pointed out that there was not a single city area represented. One Tree Hill, for example, was paying nearly £2OO a year to the council, and it was hardly right that the areas of Onehunga, Mount Eden, Mount Albert and One Tree Hill should be entirely without representation. Mr. Clark assured the board that he was not taking exception to” the personnel of the council, although he thought some change should be made at the next eelction in 12 months’ time. In view of the disbanding of the One Tree Hill Volunteer Fire Brigade, it was decided to circularise other volunteer brigades in an endeavour to dispose of the plant. Since the city had taken over the area plant valued at £IOO had been sold. The balance had been valued by Superintendent Wilson, of the brigade.
